I dedicate my #EarthDay post to my 2 sweetpeas…you’ve both taught me to slow down and look at the world every day in awe and wonder, and feel all of the joy it brings.
We can and must do better for our Earth – to protect and cherish it not only for ourselves, but especially for the young. Over the years, I’ve become increasingly inspired by the passion driving so many young people advocating for our planet, nature, wildlife…their momentum is uplifting and hopeful.
I’ve worn many hats during my career…academically as a glacial chronologist (unravelling glacier & climate histories using temperate rainforest in NZ & Arctic flora in Iceland), educationally as the manager of a nationally award-winning schools climate change programme in the UK, more recently as a gardener & garden designer, and of course, as a mum.
Nurturing my daughter on her journey to become enthralled by nature and the beauty of our planet, as well as watching her grow to understand that her generation embodies hope for our future, has been a priceless gift – empowering young people with the knowledge, skills and courage to confront the challenges we face from climate change will always be one of the things that I am most proud of.
Doing what you can at a local level to help Planet Earth thrive, protect the environment and making space for wildlife, whether in your own home/garden, within your school or community…it all adds up to help change the world for the better. Everything is connected – all of our actions count, we can all make a difference.
Happy #EarthDay everyone – what have you done today to celebrate? (We have sown seeds for night-scented plants, e.g. evening primrose, night-scented stock & phlox, to attract more moths into our garden this year).
